love at war

you’re fighting a battle long ago lost
i really believed we’d won the war
you sleep with one eye open
and a finger on the trigger
in hopes of settling the score

the wounds you sustained have long ago healed
for i was your valiant medic
i’ve washed the blood from my hands
your eyes still see red
denial kills if you let it

friend or foe?
you don’t even know anymore
i surrendered long ago,
you insist on love at war

although i took the first shot
my wrongdoing i quickly admitted
i lowered my weapon
and begged forgiveness
the fabric of war had been knitted

why can’t you just forgive me?
i want to stop this awful fighting
i’m a soldier dying fast
growing weaker every day
but determined to survive

friend or foe?
you don’t even know anymore
i surrendered long ago
you insist on love at war
